COOLERGY, which is realising the project of converting the old diesel-electric TGM4 shunting locomotive to liquid hydrogen, launched the test trials of a hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive prototype at the Tapa railway depot (Tapa raudteejaam) in Estonia.
The prototype is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell power generator, named the COOLERGYZER, designed and manufactured by COOLERGY.
The agreement between COOLERGY and Hanko Trans, Estonia, was signed in early 2024 to upgrade 12 TGM4 diesel locomotives operating in Riga. The Riga Free Port has agreed to pilot operation, so it will continue to use all 12 locomotives after the conversion to liquid hydrogen.
COOLERGY intends to supply the locomotives with its hydrogen through the construction of a H2 production plant in Narva, Estonia.
Representatives of interested companies were present at the testing of the hydrogen locomotive: LTG Cargo, RIIGILAEVASTIK, Baltic Hydrogen Group, Eesti Energia AS.
COOLERGYZER’s modular design allows for scalability, increasing its power generation capacity. COOLERGY has previously tested the generator as a charger for electric vehicles, marine vessels, locomotives, and light aircraft. A mobile version of COOLERGYZER traveled over 4,000 km from Narva to Madrid, charging cars, marine vessels in ports, and electric scooters along the way.
