The SAG LH2 tank system has reached a key milestone on the way to approval for road traffic: the successful completion of the Bonfire Test, the SAG Group announced.
During the test, the tank is confronted with extreme conditions. It has to be filled with liquid hydrogen (-253°C) and is exposed to a fire with a temperature of up to 1000°C. The aim of the test is to simulate a situation in which the vehicle is exposed to an intense fire.
The result was extremely positive. Christian Eder, project manager, commented: “No hydrogen leakage was detected during the under-firing period of 2 hours, and the safety valves subsequently discharged the stored hydrogen in a safe and controlled manner. We are more than satisfied with the result and can take away important lessons for the further development of our tank system.”
TÜV Rheinland accompanied the test and officially approved the result. The SAG LH2 tank system was thus classified as absolutely safe in the event of an accident involving fire.
