The state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting Daimler Truck's "PEGASUS" project, in which 100 innovative heavy-duty fuel cell trucks for long-distance transport are being developed, produced and tested in real customer operations.
The hydrogen ramp-up in the state is progressing - Daimler Truck has now received the approval for funding of its "PEGASUS" project from the state of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and the federal government. With up to 50 million euros, the state government is thus supporting further developments in hydrogen heavy-duty transport. The project is being implemented at various locations in Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart-Untertürkheim plant, Mannheim and Gaggenau) and in Wörth in Rhineland-Palatinate.
"Green hydrogen is an essential area of application for the climate-friendly future of the transport sector. Wherever battery-electric drives reach their limits, the use of hydrogen is an important key. This is particularly true for heavy-duty transport," explains Environment and Energy Minister Thekla Walker. "We are therefore happy to support Daimler Truck in the development of innovative approaches to achieve our climate goals together." In addition to funding from the state of Baden-Württemberg of almost 50 million euros, the project is being funded by the federal government with 158 million euros and by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate with almost 27 million euros.
Walker emphasizes: "The project shows how the mobility sector can act as a pacemaker in the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. With PEGASUS, Daimler Truck is creating new, innovative approaches for heavy-duty transport, thus enabling a sensible implementation of hydrogen technologies in the transport sector." As part of the "PEGASUS" project, Daimler-Truck AG is demonstrating and optimizing the technical and operational feasibility of emission-free, hydrogen-based long-distance trucks. As part of the project, 100 innovative heavy-duty fuel cell trucks for long-distance transport will be developed, produced and tested in real customer operation. As early as 2023, Daimler Truck was able to cover a distance of over 1,000 km on one tank of fuel with an initial prototype of a hydrogen truck. These distances are comparable to conventional diesel trucks. In recent months, hydrogen trucks have been tested in real operation for the first time. The vehicles are operated and analyzed to demonstrate the technical feasibility and practical suitability of liquid hydrogen trucks and the corresponding refueling technology.
