Spanish company Coolergy S.L. and Estonian company Hanko Trans OÜ signed a contract for modernization and retrofitting to liquefied hydrogen of 12 TGM4 shunting locomotives owned by Hanko Trans OÜ.
All locomotives operate in the port of Riga, Latvia.
Modernization and conversion of locomotives to liquefied hydrogen are expected to halve Hanko’s fuel costs, eliminate emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, and improve the tactical, technical, and ergonomic characteristics of the locomotive and its design.
This decision is fully consistent with the Riga Seaport’s 2030 carbon neutrality transition program.
Modernization and conversion of the first diesel locomotive to liquefied hydrogen is expected to be completed by September 2024.
Coolergy S.L. will build a hydrogen production and liquefaction facility with a capacity of 1 ton of LH2 per week in one of the Baltic countries. It is assumed that wind energy will be used to produce hydrogen. Negotiations are currently underway with owners of wind farms in Estonia and Latvia.
Coolergy S.L. was founded in September 2023 and is engaged in projects in the field of cryogenic and gas chemical engineering, mainly in the domain of hydrogen.
